Trailwork on the Tyndale Trail

Trail reconstruction was completed in Herring Run Park this summer. The Friends of Herring Run Parks worked with the Student Conservation Association to restore the Tyndale trail, Mayfield trail, and create a new trail in the Roberton area of the park.  The Student Conservation Association (SCA) supplied two crews of high school students to rebuild the trails over six weeks during July and August. A SCA intern hired by the Friends of Herring Run Parks coordinated the crews’ work with community members and the Baltimore Department of Recreation and Parks (DRP). DRP supplied all the mulch for the trails.

National Trails Day in Herring Run Park

The Friends of Herring Run Parks sponsored a National Trails Day event in Herring Run Park on Sunday, June 2, 2013. The event coincided with the celebration of National Trails Day across the country.  National Trails Day included hikes, fishing, food, and the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures van.

Making use of the trails running throughout Herring Run Park, participants explored new parts of the park.  Children from the community got the opportunity to learn to fish for the first time. Blue Water Baltimore provided fishing poles and Tockterman Sporting Goods donated the bait. The Sunday regulars – basketball players at the Halls Springs courts – joined in the celebration too.

Sunday Fishing in Herring Run Park

Every Sunday starting at noon, all kids are invited to try their luck with free catch and releases at the Hall Springs area under the Harford Road Bridge.  Sam Lippincott, the Park Steward, will be there with ten fishing rods and equipment for the kids to use.

Tour Dem Parks

The Friends of Herring Run Parks was excited to host a rest stop in Halls Springs of Herring Run Park for this year’s Tour Dem Parks.  One of Baltimore’s most beloved bicycle festivals, the Tour Dem Parks is an annual bike ride that winds through Baltimore’s parks and neighborhoods for a close-up view of Carroll, Patterson, Herring Run, and Druid Hill Park, as well as some quietly tucked away gems.

Held every year on the second Sunday of June, this year’s Tour landed on June 9th.  The festival holds Continue reading

A Champion Tree Dies A Fiery Death

In Herring Run Park, in northeast Baltimore City, a champion White Swamp Oak lost its battle to survive. Nature gives and nature takes, but the death of this particular tree is perhaps a preventable tragedy of circumstance.
