The Friends of Herring Run Parks sponsored a National Trails Day event in Herring Run Park on Sunday, June 2, 2013. The event coincided with the celebration of National Trails Day across the country. National Trails Day included hikes, fishing, food, and the Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures van.
Making use of the trails running throughout Herring Run Park, participants explored new parts of the park. Children from the community got the opportunity to learn to fish for the first time. Blue Water Baltimore provided fishing poles and Tockterman Sporting Goods donated the bait. The Sunday regulars – basketball players at the Halls Springs courts – joined in the celebration too.
The Colgate Bright Smiles, Bright Futures van was a great addition to National Trails Day. Children received free dental screenings and treatment referrals and their parents took home education materials and tips on improving oral health.
National Trails Day was also a great opportunity to inform community members about FHRP and our mission to preserve, protect, restore, and promote Herring Run Parks and its stream valley.
Overall, the event allowed participants to engage with the park in new ways. Whether it was walking trails that were new to them or learning how to fish for the first time, children and community members alike found a new connection to Herring Run Park.
